Transit

Introduction

Leave the driving to somebody else! For many commuters, transit is the transportation of choice; for others it's the ideal back-up.

What is Transit?

Transit provides economical, dependable transportation to a variety of destinations using buses and trains. Transit works well for commuters on a regular schedule, who live or work near a transit stop, and who enjoy a short walk on one or both ends of the trip.

How Do You Save?

The typical bus fare in the coverage area averages $1.50. Tri-Rail riders can make one-way trips for as little as $2.00. Applying monthly passes and tax benefits can bring the price of transit down even further.

The Benefits of Transit

  • You leave the driving to somebody else!
  • Arrive relaxed and ready to work or play, free of commuting stress.
  • You can enroll in the Emergency Ride Home program.
  • You are eligible to receive Commuter Tax Benefits.
  • If you don't drive or don't have a car, transit gives you regional mobility.
  • For your convenience many transit systems provide racks for bikes.
  • The average bus removes numerous cars from the road, reducing the need for more highways and parking spaces.
  • Buses emit only 20 percent as much carbon monoxide as single-occupant autos per passenger mile, only 10 percent of the hydrocarbons, and only 75 percent as much nitrogen oxides.
  • Rail transit emits 25 percent as much nitrogen oxides, and almost no hydrocarbons and carbon monoxides.
  • Public transportation use in America avoids the emission of over 126 million pounds of hydrocarbons, and 156 million pounds of nitrogen oxides per year.
