826/836 Project
On November 30, 2009, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six in partnership with the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) began a reconstruction project of the S.R. 826/Palmetto Expressway and S.R. 836/Dolphin Expressway Interchange. The construction limits are approximately just north of SW 8th Street to NW 25th Street on S.R. 826; just east of NW 87th Avenue to NW 57th Avenue on S.R. 836. Capacity improvements include the reconstruction and widening along both S.R. 826 and S.R. 836, the construction of a four-level interchange as well as the reconstruction/ modifications of the Flagler Street/ S.R. 826 and the Milam Dairy Road/NW 72nd Avenue/S.R. 836 interchanges.
Key improvements and benefits include:
- Construction of new connections between S.R. 826 and S.R. 836 in all directions allowing motorists direct access and reducing travel times.
- Construction of a new direct connection from northbound S.R. 826 to westbound S.R. 836
- Construction of connector ramps and frontage roads eliminating the need to use mainline S.R. 826 and S.R. 836, thereby minimizing traffic and providing access to local roads.
- Relocation of Milam Dairy Road, and reconstruction of on/off ramps, enhancing access to/from S.R. 836.
- Interchange reconstruction at West Flagler Street with triple left turns for all movements enhancing access to and from the S.R. 826 ramps along with widening and resurfacing of West Flagler Street between SW/NW 76th Avenue and SW/NW 78th Place.
- Installation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) cameras and sensors allowing for real-time traffic updates, as well as assisting in the rapid deployment of first responders and Road Rangers to clear disabled and accident vehicles from travel lanes.
